The Clara Barton Birthplace Museum teaches the timeless lessons of compassion and service through Clara Barton’s life story. Throughout her long life she sought to improve people’s lives by, in her own words, “offering a hand up, not a handout.” Clara Barton has inspired countless teachers, medical professionals and social workers. Almost two centuries after her birth, the incredible stories of this great humanitarian continue to draw students and families to her childhood home to learn about her boundless mercy and commitment.

This American treasure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves Clara Barton’s legacy of compassion. Located within the Quinebaug-Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor in North Oxford, Massachusetts, the property is also home to The Barton Center for Diabetes Education, Inc., a premiere health education institution for children with diabetes and their families.

Indian Ranch has been hosting live outdoor entertainment since 1946, making it one of the oldest concert venues in the country. It is an outdoor amphitheater situated on the shores of a beautiful lake with a record long name… Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg! The folklore translation of the name is “You fish on your side of the lake, I fish on my side of the lake, nobody fishes in the middle”. Kids have fun learning to pronounce the name and our lake souvenirs are a popular item.

The Last Green Valley is two things – it’s the 35-town National Heritage Corridor in eastern Connecticut and south-central Massachusetts, and it’s also your member-supported, non-profit stewardship organization working for you in the National Heritage Corridor. We help you to care for it, enjoy it, and pass it on to the next generation.

At night, the region appears distinctively dark amid the urban and suburban glow when viewed from satellites or aircraft. In the daytime, the green fields and forests confirm the surprisingly rural character of the 1,100 square-mile area defined by the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers systems and the rugged hills that surround them. For this reason, northeastern Connecticut and south-central Massachusetts have been called “The Last Green Valley” in the sprawling metropolitan Boston-to-Washington Corridor.

The lake’s name comes from Nipmuc, an Algonquian language, and is often said to mean, “Fishing Place at the Boundaries — Neutral Meeting Grounds”. A more fitting translation is “lake divided by islands”, according to anthropologist Ives Goddard.

Today, “Webster Lake” may be the name most used, but some (including many residents of Webster), take pride in reeling off the longer versions. This lake has several alternative names. Lake Chaubunagungamaug is the name of the lake as recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and is the name appearing in the earliest local records
